(MountEverest.net) On Alpinist's to-do-list as one of the great unclimbed faces, a few days back Chang Himal’s 1,500m north wall was reportedly sent by Andy Houseman and fellow Brit Nick Bullock.
Slovenians Ales Koželj and Mitja Sorn tackled the face two years ago, but stopped midway up due to heavy snow. Now Houseman and Bullock have seemingly solved this climbing problem in the Kangchenjunga region.
Time to rough it, said Andy
Supported by several climbing grants and awards, the two Brits arrived Kangchenjunga BC three weeks ago in order to acclimatize on nearby peaks.
The main climb up the face’s central spur would go in one single push. “We’ll just start at the bottom and keep going,” Nick told website DMM before departure. "After a brilliant summer doing loads of rock climbing, it's time to do some suffering,” he said.
A group of friends came along to BC but left when time came for the climb. Yesterday, the word arrived: "Hi, got back to BC 2 days ago," said the text message, "all safe and sound with north face ticked! Start walk out today…see you soon, Andy."
Chang Himal, also known as Wedge Peak (6812m) sits in Jongsang Himal (Nepal), a few kilometers north-west of Kangchenjunga. It was first climbed by a team from the former Yugoslavia, via its south side. The 1,500m north face was attempted by Slovenians Ales Koželj and Mitja Sorn in 2007 and, according to reports, finally sent this year by Brits Andy Houseman and Nick Bullock.
