06:39 am CDT Jul 26, 2009
(K2Climb.net/Madrid) “The world is great! - the weather is perfect, there is no wind at the top. You can see all the Karakoram below.” Such were Veikka Gustafsson's comments from GI's summit - the Finnish climber has now bagged all 14x8000ers without supplementary O2.
"Veikka and Kazuya set off from at 00:30 am and They reached the summit at around 8 :00 am, local time, after working together with the Bulgarian team," Tammisuo added. "Now the guys have a long way back to BC ahead."
GI was Veikka's last 8000+ meters peak to complete the 14x8000ers list, in which he now holds number #17. In addition, Gustafsson has climbed all 14 without supplementary O2.
Story updated 11:25 am CDT "Bulgarians Nikolay Petkov, Doychin Boyanov, Boyan Petrov, Nikolay Valkov summited Gasherbrum 1 (8068m) on Sunday morning, July 26, 2009 with
Veikka Gustafsson (Finland) and Kazuya Hiraide (Japan)," Peter Atanasov told ExplorersWeb later today. "The climbers are currently back in C3 at 7,100 m. They'll proceed further down to BC tomorrow."
